For 20 years, I’ve written about unique estates, architectural properties and virtually everything to do with real estate. I’ve also been an avid investor in the financial markets, celebrating a few (small) victories and learning some (very) expensive lessons.
Throughout it all, I’ve thought about the pursuit of wealth. What does it mean to stand at the top of the pyramid?
For some, the story behind the home is what matters: a home with a famous designer or a unique history of ownership is just cooler than a newly built estate. For me, being wealthy was always more about financial security.
Writing about these amazing properties requires me to tour them virtually and imagine what it would be like to live there. This has made the idea of being rich more alluring—I simply want to provide a better life for my family, and myself (not gonna lie).
The chance to give more is another motivator. In crafting narratives about custom estates, I’ve slipped into daydreams about relaxing poolside with a margarita, watching the sunset and planning a night out at a fundraiser.
In short, I am now more inspired by the philanthropy of Bill Gates and Warren Buffett than the lifestyle of Jimmy Buffett. Sorry Jimmy, it was a necessary change in attitude.
Regardless of your motivations, it’s fairly clear that investing is one of the best ways to build wealth…there’s a reason why the top 10% of American households own 90% of the stock market. So many believe they can’t invest (I sure didn’t), but money drowns under the weight of inflation every day.
There is really no choice when it comes to investing. This idea has made me persevere in spite of the many laughable, embarrassing blunders I’ve committed over the years. By sharing these stories, I’m hoping to help others avoid the same mistakes.
